Choosing between PNG and JPG
A PNG image records every pixel precisely, which is why the outlines of text and drawings come out clean. That makes it a good fit for letters, forms and diagrams.
If the pages are mostly photographs, you will get far smaller files from PDF to JPG.
Image size and background
Every page is placed on a white background, just as it would look printed. An A4 page saved at 150 dpi measures 1240 × 1754 pixels. Doubling the resolution to 300 dpi doubles both the width and the height, and makes the file around four times as big.
Pages that are extremely large are scaled down automatically, which stops phones running out of memory.
Questions and answers
Why is my PNG file so large?
PNG keeps every pixel exactly, so files are bigger than JPG, especially at higher resolutions. Going from 150 dpi to 300 dpi makes each file roughly four times larger.
Will transparent areas stay transparent?
No. Each page is saved on a white background, the way it would look on paper.
Why did a very big page come out smaller than expected?
To keep phones from running out of memory, the biggest pages are scaled down automatically.
